According to a new study Resveratrol, a compound found in Red Wine, may help tackle a hormone disparity in women with a common condition that could cause infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS causes an overproduction of the hormone testosterone and has been determined to affect between 6 to 8% of all women who are of reproductive age. Other hormones like DHEAS (dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate) are also produced in excessive amounts.
Women with PCOS experience absent or irregular menstrual periods, infertility or increased facial and body hair. Women with PCOS also have a higher risk of developing diabetes.
30 women with PCOS participated in this randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study. The study lasted 3 months. Hormone levels of testosterone and other hormones were determined by participants who gave blood samples at the beginning and at the end of the study period. Tests to determine glucose tolerance were also given at the beginning and the end of the study to assess the risk factors for diabetes.
Resveratrol has been identified in prior studies to aid in regulating excess hormone production in the ovaries and in its ability to hamper cell multiplication and growth without any cytotoxic effects. Additionally studies have shown Resveratrol may lower the risk of developing diabetes by aiding the body’s ability to utilize insulin.
Researchers found testosterone levels dropped by 23.1% in the participants supplementing with Resveratrol in comparison with those supplementing with the placebo who saw a 2.9% increase in testosterone levels. DHEAS levels declined by 22.2% in the Resveratrol group and rose 10.5% in the group supplementing with the placebo.
Further studies are needed.
Resveratrol, a compound found in Red Wine, has been shown to support a healthy heart in addition to providing the anti-aging benefits associated with a reduced calorie diet which in turn aids in supporting the overall health of living cells.
