A new study found a modest 4 mg of zinc supplemented every other day may reduce breaks in DNA strands and may improve levels of proteins involved in inflammation, DNA repair, and oxidative stress.
18 men participated in this randomized controlled study. The study lasted 6 weeks. The participants consumed a diet which contained 6 mg of zinc daily for 2 weeks then consumed a diet containing 10 mg of zinc daily for 4 weeks. Results showed total absorbed zinc increase when dietary zinc increased but plasma levels of zinc did not change. Increased dietary zinc supplementation was associated with decreases in DNA strand breaks in leukocytes. Additionally increases in dietary zinc restored levels of proteins involved in immune and antioxidant functions and DNA repair.
