Magnesium Supplements Show Potential Anti-Inflammatory Effects

MagnesiumA new meta-analysis found supplementing with Magnesium may reduce levels of inflammatory biomarkers.

11 randomized controlled trials were used for this meta-analysis which was designed to study how plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) was affected by oral Magnesium supplementation.  CRP is an established marker of inflammation and is high in individuals with chronic inflammation.  Researchers found individuals with elevated CRP levels at the start of the trials who supplemented with Magnesium saw a significant reduction in CRP levels over the length of the studies.

Magnesium is an important and often overlooked mineral.  It is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body including but not limited to keeping bones strong, supporting a healthy immune function, keeping the heart rhythm study and helping maintain normal nerve and muscle function.  Between 70% – 80% of the population in the United States does not intake the recommended daily dose of Magnesium.

More studies are warranted.

Chondroitin Sulfate as Good as Widely Used Anti-Inflammatory Drug for Knee Osteoarthritis

Chondroitin and Knee OsteoarthritisNew research shows a high quality Chondroitin Sulfate supplements may be as effective as a very commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for treating knee osteoarthritis.

Over 600 individuals with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to receive one of three different daily treatments.  Participants were then monitored for six months.  One group was given an 800 mg tablet of Chondroitin Sulfate and a 200 g tablet of a fake version of the anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex.  Group two was given a fake tablet of Chondroitin Sulfate and one Celebrex.  The final group was given a fake tablet of Chondroitin Sulfate and a fake tablet of Celebrex.  Participants were then assessed using a validated scoring system to gauge the overall acceptability of the assigned protocol, joint function and pain levels at 30 days, 91 days and 182 days.

Pain reductions were significantly greater after six months and joint function showed improvements in three months in groups receiving either the Chondroitin Sulfate or the Celebrex.  Although there were no differences in the overall effectiveness of either active treatment (both the Celebrex and the Chondroitin Sulfate treatments were highly rated by participants) joint function improved more quickly in participants taking the Celebrex.

Researchers concluded a higher quality Chondroitin Sulfate should be the first treatment considered for this condition due to the known risks for continued usage of Celebrex and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

CoQ10 Supplementation Shows Benefits for Liver Cancer Patients Post Surgery

liver cancerA new study shows daily supplementation with 300 mg of CoQ10 significantly increases antioxidant capacity and reduces inflammation levels and oxidative stress levels after surgery for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer.

41 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) participated in this single-blinded, randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled study.  A random numbers table was used to randomly assign the participants to receive either the CoQ10 (300 mg) or a placebo.  The study lasted 12 weeks.  The levels of antioxidant enzymes activity was significantly increased in the CoQ10 supplement group.  Additionally the CoQ10 group had significantly decreased oxidative stress and inflammatory markers levels when compared to the placebo group.

Larger and longer studies are needed to confirm the benefits seen with CoQ10 supplementation in patients with HCC taken after surgery.

CoQ 10 is a cell oxygenator and supports the transfer of oxygen between the cells. It is an antioxidant and supports cardiovascular health by promoting energy on a cellular level. Scientific studies show Co Q 10 is three times more bioavailable when delivered in an oil based softgel capsule.

Could Glucosamine and Chondroitin Support A Healthy Colon?

ColonAccording to data from two large US cohort studies, supplementing glucosamine and chondroitin may aid colon health due to their anti-inflammatory mechanism.

Data from over 68,000 women and almost 28,000 men who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study respectively were analyzed.  672 cases of colorectal cancer were identified from the data.  After reviewing the numbers researchers found any use of Glucosamine and Chondroitin was associated with a 23% reduction in the risk of developing colorectal cancer.  This review supports date from another study, the Vitamins and Lifestyle Study (VITAL), published back in 2009.

Researchers theorize that the reported anti-inflammatory properties associated with Glucosamine and Chondroitin reduce inflammation in the colonic cells.  They suggest additional studies be performed to better understand the association between colorectal cancer and the use of Glucosamine and Chondroitin and also the means by which these supplements affect the risk of colorectal cancer.
